Potsdam - July 5th 2023 - Komoot and endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox will host the komoot Women’s Arizona Rally 2023 between 11th and 18th November this Autumn/Fall. This event will be the first komoot Women’s Rally to take place outside of Europe, with the aim of making the event more accessible for women and all that identify as women living in North America.
It’ll be our first komoot Women’s Rally outside of Europe and will really be a dream come true. We’ll be a rolling community of women in the desertsays Lael
The first komoot Women’s Rally in 2021 was a direct response to women often being underrepresented in cycling. The rallies aim to connect, unite, and break down the barriers in adventure cycling by making bike adventures more accessible to women of all backgrounds. The goal of each komoot Women’s Rally is to share knowledge, learn-by-doing, and above all else, have fun.
Komoot and Lael have since hosted four more Women’s Rally events, with a fifth taking place in Slovenia in September this year. Previous events have ridden iconic European bikepacking routes including the Torino-Nice Rally route, starting in Italy and finishing in France, the Montañas Vacias route in Spain, and the GranGuanche Gravel route, that transverses the Canary Islands.
The September komoot Women’s Slovenia Rally will be the first event to ride a route designed and created by women.
Created by Lael, the komoot Women’s Arizona Rally route starts and finishes in Tucson, Arizona, her hometown. Riders can expect a wild and remote 370-mile (600 km) route taking in many of Lael’s favourite riding locations, trails, and roads.
The Tucson women’s rally combines my favorite loop in the north to lovely remote riding near the (Arizona) border.says Lael
The route includes Mount Lemmon, which she describes as her ‘true love in the area’, a paved road climb that gains 6,000 feet (1,800 m) in 20 miles (32 km), and passes through a diverse ecological range – starting in the Sonoran desert and finishing in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests.
A highlight of this trip will definitely be camping. Arizona has a wealth of public land and much of this route passes through BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land where it’s legal to camp for free. The desert is dry and this is a dark sky area— the best for sleeping under the starsadds Lael
The komoot Women’s Rally events are limited to ~ 75 participants to keep an intimate feeling and ensure that small local towns and communities are not overstressed during the events.
Applications are open for the Women’s Arizona Rally from 5th 6.30pm (CET) to 16th July. Successful applicants will be told by email on 28th July. Further information on how to apply can be found in the komoot Collection.
