Kids and Coastlines

Adventure is for everyone

Following the launch of komoot and Route YC’s Yorkshire Coast cycling and bikepacking routes, the ‘Along For The Ride’ crew planned their own two-day adventure between Scarborough and Whitby with komoot. Kids and Coastlines is a story about  Kell, Phoebe, Vicky, CeCe, Sabine, Atlas and Torben as they team up to tackle some of Britain’s finest landscapes with opportunities to play, eat, build sandcastles and re-route along the way.

Equipped with trailers, mountain bikes, a gravel bike, an e-bike, and an ICE trike, the team explored Yorkshire’s countryside on and off-road, taking all the kit they needed for the perfect trip — including pyjamas, plenty of snacks and even some on-board entertainment for Torben and Atlas.

Kids and Coastline shows that adventure truly is for everyone — regardless of age, ability or experience.

Most women are lost to the world of outdoors once they have their children because the mental load of parenting, work and life stresses take over. There’s very little space or energy left to do this kind of stuff. So I think it’s really important for these kinds of adventures to be visible to encourage other mums to do it. If you can see it you can be it. Phoebe Sneddon, and Sabine and Torben’s Mum, said:
Families with disabled youngsters can easily become isolated and sidelined from everyday life. With CeCe’s trike, we are able to enjoy the same outdoor activities as other families and it’s an incredible feeling. Being able to explore the countryside with good friends who understand what life is like with caring responsibilities brings a whole new level of comfort and enjoyment. It’s so important that other families and young people see folk who look like them enjoying the outdoors so they know they can do it too. Vicky Balfour, CeCe’s Mum said:
My dad is from Hull, so growing up we'd often holiday all along the Yorkshire coast. This meant when I was introduced to the Route YC I already had a personal interest - I was keen and excited to explore the route and region. To do a taster with my son in tow and using komoot we could customise the route to suit our needs as a group, made it much more achievable and accessible. With the dream team, we had ourselves a real pocket-adventure. Kelly-Jayne Collinge, komoot Cycling Community Manager, Atlas’ Mum said:

Route YC: The Routes

The Route YC cycle routes have been designed by Great British Gravel Rides author and Bikepacking Scotland founder Markus Stitz. The network of twelve routes ranging from 9 to 260 miles can be found exclusively on komoot. Designed for gravel bikes, the routes are equally fun on mountain bikes, combining a good mix of gravel paths, singletrails, cycle path and quiet road.
