Potsdam, 25th June 2024 – Komoot can today announce the launch of Gravel Routes — ready-made routes for gravel riding generated by komoot’s industry-leading routing, based on the most popular off-road trails in local cycling communities worldwide.
Thanks to the ever-growing 160,000 gravel routes available on the komoot platform, users can now easily find and browse routes for off-road adventures on an interactive map. Star rating and filters, including distance, duration, and elevation help facilitate the choice of route for all abilities and levels of experience.
Each recommended Route can be immediately navigated, saved for later or customised in the komoot Route Planner if needed. After the ride, users can rate Tours, upload images from the trail and add Highlights (user recommendations), so that the whole gravel community has a detailed insight into the best adventures, and to contribute to the continuous improvement of the gravel Route search results and coverage.
After the pioneering launch of the gravel-specific Route Planner seven years ago, which made planning multi-terrain routes seamless, komoot has released another industry-leading feature that makes off-road adventures more accessible and more enjoyable for riders worldwide.
As the concept of ‘gravel riding’ may vary substantially in different countries and different regions, the new Gravel Routes are based on community feedback, so users know they’ll always ride the best spots. With komoot, users can utilise the expertise of local riders for the best gravel route in a given area, reliably navigate it and share their opinion post-ride with the whole community.
At the core of the new Gravel Routes search is komoot’s smart routing technology, a routing algorithm that combines community-based insights with a powerful mapping system. Using suggestions, tips, and photos from local experts, and detailed up-to-date map data komoot’s algorithm focuses on what gravel cyclists want from a cycling route. The routing algorithm only includes safe and responsible tracks, prioritising unpaved surfaces suitable for gravel bikes and favouring the most popular trails and Highlights amongst gravel cyclists.
As a result, on komoot you can already find over 160,000 Gravel Routes worldwide that are ready-made for your next gravel riding adventure. This number is constantly growing, and route coverage and search results will continuously evolve with fresh community input.
Our community’s feedback is pivotal to developing features that tangibly help people explore more of the great outdoors. We launched the new Gravel Routes to indulge our users’ desire for ready-made gravel adventures — ones that are both easy to search and reliable to navigate worldwide. Allowing gravel riders to find ready-made routes at the tap of a button is just another step towards a product that aims at making adventures more accessible and more enjoyable for everyone.Tom Eldred, Product Manager at komoot, said:
With komoot, finding a ready-made gravel route is now easier than ever before. Users just need to head to the new ‘Routes’ tab in the app or desktop menu, select ‘gravel riding’ as sport type and enter a location (where they are currently or maybe further afield). All suggested Routes will appear on a map interface that clearly shows Tourlines, start points and directions, alongside a star rating that will help users identify the most beloved routes from the community — five stars is the best.
Additionally, users can further customise their search using filters for elevation, duration and distance, and the type of itinerary (loop or out and back) — so they will only receive suggestions that fit their needs and preferences.
After identifying their favourite Route, users can save it for later, navigate it immediately (via phone or with their GPS device) or adjust it with the route planner if required.
When the off-road adventure comes to an end, it’s time for a review. By rating Tours and adding to Highlights with tips and images, users will help other gravel riders make the most of the great outdoors.
Combining industry-leading technology with community insights and tips is at the heart of what we do at komoot. Our community plays a key role in our product development: we invest a lot of resources into user research because we want to design features that can truly fulfil our users’ needs and expectations. Our users can now enjoy reliable, safe gravel routes thanks to the aggregation of the best tour data and smart technology, allowing them to find, plan and enjoy many new adventures.Jonas Spengler, Co-Founder and CTO at komoot, said:
