Komoot announces the launch of the inaugural komoot UK Hiking Rally

For Immediate Release

Potsdam - 27th June 2024 - Komoot announces the launch of the first komoot Hiking Rally, set to take place from the 20th to 22nd of September 2024 in the stunning Peak District National Park. The komoot Hiking Rally will support komoot’s commitment to making outdoor adventures more accessible and fostering connections among outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Inspired by the success of the komoot Women’s (bikepacking) Rally events, this event aims to encourage hikers of all backgrounds to take the next step from day hikes to multi-day journeys - providing a supportive environment for building confidence and skills. Starting in Edale and finishing in Marsden, the 32 mile (52 km) route follows the Pennine Way Trail, Trans Pennine Trail and the Kirklees Way.

Why host the komoot Hiking Rally?

Komoot has designed the Hiking Rally to encourage more people to explore the outdoors and take on multi-day hiking adventures. Inspired by the success of komoot Women’s Rallies, the event seeks to provide an opportunity for hikers of all levels to experience long-distance hiking in a supportive and community-focused environment. Komoot aims to help individuals journey from day hikes to multi-day treks, offering guidance and support along the way.

Grace, the UK Hiking Community Manager at komoot, emphasises the goal of fostering new friendships and shared memories through a passion for hiking.

This will be our first komoot Hiking Rally - we want to encourage more people to have big adventures in a small time frame and see that you can do small sections of long-distance trails over a weekend. I often hear that people want to take the next step from day hikes to multi-day adventures but don’t know where to start or have anyone to go with. We want to see more people having the confidence and skills to take this next step

Route Highlights - A Shared Adventure

From 20th to 22nd September 2024, the komoot Hiking Rally will journey through the Peak District National Park. Traversing the Pennine Way, the Rally follows this historic trail, taking participants from Edale to Marsden. Hikers will walk approximately 32.4 miles (52 km) of scenic landscapes, including the moorlands of Kinder Scout, the striking rock formations of Bleaklow, and the picturesque reservoirs of the Wessenden Valley. The route also incorporates sections of the Trans Pennine Trail and the Kirklees Way.

The adventure begins on Friday evening with campfire talks, and tips and advice sessions hosted by komoot and event partners. On Saturday, hikers will tackle the first segment of the Pennine Way. After camping in Tintwistle on Saturday night, the journey concludes in Marsden on Sunday, with a Finishers Party from 4 pm onwards. Participants can hike solo, with others, or join a range of ‘Hike Together’ pace groups, and walk with qualified Mountain Leaders - allowing them to spend time with other outdoor enthusiasts and support each other along the way.

The Rally is not a race, it’s a self-supported adventure with the goal of enjoying the route and camaraderie. Participants can hike at their own pace and are expected to carry their kit and equipment, with an optional ‘heavy tent’ transfer service.

Inspired by partners

The komoot Hiking Rally is a Trash Free Trails approved event, and komoot commits to no single-use pollution. Hikers are asked to bring reusable water bottles, cups and cutlery, and keep their single-use pollution to a minimum. The event will aim to ‘leave a positive trace’ by supporting local communities and completing a trail clean along the route.

The route is accessible by public transport, with easy connections for return travel, and participants are encouraged to use public transport and car share where possible.

A number of spaces are reserved for hikers from underrepresented groups with support from Alpkit, Firepot Food, and UK outdoor and hiking community groups.

Komoot thanks the Pennine Way, National Trails UK, Peak District National Park, and National Trust for their advice and support in preparation of the event. Komoot will be making donations to all four organisations, and offer participants the opportunity to do the same, to support the work they do in maintaining the trails and landscapes.
